Do you know that emotions are meant to be felt, not stored? When we feel them and process them, we set ourselves free. Let me explain.
Many of us think emotions live only in our minds — like thoughts that disappear if we ignore them.
But emotions are chemistry, and your body feels them long before your mind catches up.
👉 Here’s how it works — and why processing your emotions matters for your long-term health. When emotions stay unprocessed, they create hidden stress patterns that show up in the body as inflammation and dysregulation.
And if you’re anything like me, Stephanie, there were seasons when I didn’t understand why my body was reacting the way it was — and the biology behind it explains so much.
What Happens Inside Your Body When You’re Overwhelmed 💥
When you feel overwhelmed emotionally with life — the demands, the noise, the pressure — your heart rate speeds up, your breath shortens, your shoulders rise. Cortisol surges. Your nervous system shifts into protection mode — not because you’re weak, but because your body is doing exactly what God designed it to do: protect you.
Or maybe you’ve never realized, like I once didn’t, that you often say yes to please others and “no” feels too hard to say. So, you surrender your own needs and desires to avoid disappointing people. As a result, your body feels the inner conflict — the misalignment between what you want and what you say — and it becomes more protective.
The problem is that if those same patterns are repeated, the body stays in that “on guard” state for too long. That low hum of alertness keeps your central nervous system quietly bracing for something that’s no longer happening. And when that happens, your body stops prioritizing digestion, balancing hormones, immune strengthening, skin repair, deep sleep, and metabolism — because it’s prioritizing survival. It keeps healing OFF.
So, if you’ve been doing all the right things and still struggling with bouts of fatigue, insulin resistance, digestive disturbances, insomnia, autoimmune flares, body aches, or skin flare-ups — it’s not a lack of discipline. It’s physiology responding to emotions your body has carried but never fully processed and released.
The mind may say, “I’m fine,” but the body remembers.
The Dream That Changed Everything ✈️
A while ago, I had a dream that took my breath away.
I was standing in security line at an airport, watching lines of people each place what looked like a hundred of their own bags onto the conveyor belt. To everyone around, it seemed normal — while my mind was frantically trying to make sense of it all. And in that instant, I felt the shock of what was truly happening — and I woke up barely able to breathe.
In that moment, I sensed God whisper:
“You were never meant to carry it all.”
Everyone was carrying way too much baggage. Piling it on. Dragging it through life.
We carry emotional baggage like invisible suitcases — the shame, the fear, the perfectionism, the striving, the grief — and it’s weighing us down. It’s not just emotional; it’s biological.
So often, it’s not weakness — it’s our lack of permission to rest, to say no, to open up the suitcase we’ve been carrying for years and finally look inside.
To name what’s there.
To tell the truth about the weight.
To begin releasing what was never ours to carry — instead of sweeping it under the rug and never processing what’s inside.
We can’t live healthy and whole while ignoring or repressing what our body and soul are trying to tell us.
What Did Jesus Do with Emotion? 💧
Before we talk about what Jesus tells us to do with our emotional unrest, it helps to look at what He Himself modeled.
Even though He knew He was about to raise Lazarus from the dead,
Jesus wept.
He wept. He allowed Himself to feel the weight of grief and the pain of those He loved. He did not rush past His emotions — He expressed them truthfully and fully.
And He told us what to do with our tangled emotions and weariness:
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28)
Jesus also reminded us:
“In this world you will have trouble. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33)
Trouble is a part of life.
But so is His peace.
And the peace He gives isn’t just emotional; it quiets the body.
It moves us out of fear and back into the parasympathetic state where healing happens and cortisol lowers.
Life is hard, yes — but we were never meant to live in constant fear, anxiety, or sympathetic overdrive.
Three Simple Steps to Begin Releasing What You’re Carrying 🎈
- Breathe deeply — and often.
Slow, intentional breaths signal to your nervous system that the danger has passed.
This helps you process emotions instead of unconsciously storing them.
- Scan your body with compassion.
Close your eyes and gently notice any tightness, heat, or heaviness.
Ask yourself, “What is this tension trying to tell me?”
Awareness is the first step toward release.
- Pray honestly.
Tell the truth — not the polished version, but the raw, real one. Emotional healing isn’t about forcing yourself to “move on.”
It’s about allowing yourself to notice what’s there and bringing it honestly before God.
Let your emotions have a voice — through prayer, expressive journaling, tears, anger — He meets you right where you are.
Scripture gives us another picture of emotional release. When Joseph saw his brothers years after their betrayal, he wailed so loudly that everyone in Pharaoh’s household heard him. His whole body released years of grief, pain, and unprocessed hurt — and it became part of his healing.
Truth is medicine for the soul and the body. Let it wash over your nervous system.
Healing comes in seasons — and even the hard ones carry purpose — they bring freedom, healing, and transformation.
But the choice is yours.
What small step will you take today to move out of fear and into your parasympathetic mode where healing happens?
