How Strong is Your Optimism Muscle?

Do you want to develop an amazing superpower?

You are about to discover the life-changing power of… Drum roll please!! …

Boosting your optimism!

Whether you have a little bit, whether you’re a natural pessimist, or whether you have lots of optimism, this is something we all want to boost, so let’s get to it!

Only those who believe they can — can truly do so — right?  Proverbs says it well: “As a man thinks (believes), so he is”!

Optimism is a powerful force and applies to big dreams and to daily achievements.  For me, it’s the most important attitude I stressed with my family.

And now, as a health and wellness coach I help my clients see their incredible ability to set, enjoy and achieve new goals for their health and life.

I see their potential I believe it for them and with them and I’m optimistic that they can do it and enjoy the process all the while.

Developing optimism will help us; it helps us set, enjoy, and achieve new goals.

It is a “muscle” that you develop, a mindset that you develop, it does not come naturally… our default is pessimism, which drains our energy and slows our progress.

Let’s talk about daily life, I mean realistically, why is optimism so important and what does optimism look like in our everyday life?

Here are two examples:

1) What about those days when you don’t want to be a full-time mommy and are exhausted from all its demands, or those days when you don’t want to be at work juggling upcoming deadlines, solving problems… all because you slept badly the night before, or your back hurts, or you just had an argument with your husband.

Even on those days — you get to decide how you show up. You decide the energy that you bring to your environment and the atmosphere that you create, whether it allows for positivity or negativity for you and everyone else. That power is in your hands.

2) When we are working hard on our goals, we always want it faster than it’s going to happen, right? But if we listen to the soundtrack of “if this was going to work it would have worked by now,” our tendency is to well, simply give up.  This is why an optimistic mindset is so important it will give you more tenacity, resiliency and ongoing strength!

Ready to learn ways to strengthen your optimism muscle? So glad you asked…

Five Simple Ways to Boost Optimism in Your Life:

1.  Accept That Life Is Sometimes Hard

Make peace with the fact that sometimes life can feel awful, undoubtedly it will (and I’m an optimist).  There’s no getting around that life can be extremely difficult at times.  I write about those seasons in my life in my book “Strong, Sane & Sassy”.  But honestly these difficult seasons build resiliency. I believe resiliency is a powerful quality to possess, yet it only solidifies within us when we get back up and keep believing with hope, energy, and optimism that life is good. Believe that good things will come… and with that optimistic attitude… they will!

2.  Prime Your Environment for Optimism!

Is your life happier by following more politics every day?  No?  Take a break from it!  For real, surround yourself with things that will keep you positive! 🥰

Who do you spend most of your time with…  people who build you up and are a great role model to you?  What are you listening to?  What are you reading?  What are you watching?

Your outputs are only as good as your inputs = make them high quality! Make sure everything that you’re allowing into your environment is making you more optimistic, hopeful, and resilient. Lean into what gives you a more positive attitude, not a more pessimistic one.  Deliberately surround yourself with things to boost your optimism day after day.

3.  Recognize Your Wins

Celebrating our wins every day is essential because it course-corrects us from our brains natural state of pessimism.

At the end of each day reflect:  Where did I win?  Wins like: “I hydrated myself drinking refreshing water all day”; “I took a brisk walk during my lunch break”; or “Instead of diving into a bag of Doritos, I took a few deep breaths and turned the stress of my kids’ constant squabbling into a dance party with them.”

Express gratitude for every little win!  Wins can be our biggest blessings in life.  And remember we need to recognize those blessings so that we can enjoy them.  I have my coaching clients journal three wins or three successes that they’ve experienced before our session together.  Not only to practice gratitude and to experience the health benefits gratitude brings, but also to build confidence as we recognize our success!

4.  Partner With God

My constant repeated heart prayer to God is to help me renew my mind with what is good and right and excellent.  And He does!  I’m at the point where if negative, pessimistic, unhealthy thoughts try to even get close to the door of my mind I push them away.  I shut it tight.  I’m not talking about an emotion that I need to process; I’m talking about a thought that is false, unhealthy, and not worthy of entering my mind.

Ask God to transform you in this way, to turn down the volume on negativity and pessimism and turn up the volume on optimism.  God can and does completely change lives and hearts — yet it’s not going to happen overnight. But the same spirit that raised Jesus from the dead lives in us. That spirit is more than capable of helping us to become more optimistic in life and reap the health benefits that come with it.

5.  Don’t Let Your Emotions Run the Show

When you feel stuck in a negative mood or spiral, you don’t have to allow yourself to continue spiraling.  First, do something physically to shift your outlook and your mood:

✔️Move your body
✔️Take a walk outside in the sunlight
✔️Listen to great music
✔️Talk to God — pray

So, there you go.

These five things (again they’re not hard things) are small habits that we can develop that change so much in our life.  No matter where you are right now in life, you can be full of optimism as you build your optimism muscle.  💪

Start with these little habits that over time are going to build and build and build.  We’re dialing up the optimism and we’re dialing down the pessimism.  This is not only going to help you feel better, but it’ll also help you live abundantly healthy, and that will benefit everyone around you because the truth is:

The world is full of loud pessimists, but the world is built by optimists!
